Alcohol Abuse and Alcohol Rehab
By Jonathan Huttner

Alcoholism and Alcohol Rehab Alcoholism is a serious disease and the problem is growing. The National Council On Alcoholism And Drug Dependence statistics reveal that approximately 18 million Americans suffer from alcohol abuse. Each year more than 100,000 Americans die from alcohol related deaths and alcohol is a factor in nearly half of all traffic fatalities. Over half of the men and women in the United States report that one or more of their family members have an alcohol abuse problem.

According to the National Institute On Alcohol Abuse And Alcoholism, alcoholism is a disease that has four main components:
. Craving - An overwhelming need to drink
. Loss of Control - An inability to put the drink down
. Physical Dependence - After a period of heavy drinking withdrawal symptoms occur
such as nausea, shaking, and anxiety
. Tolerance - Needing greater amounts of alcohol to obtain a “high” Alcohol Abuse Complications

The complications to the body from alcohol abuse may include damage to the brain and central nervous system, liver disorders, gastrointestinal problems, cardiovascular problems, diabetes complications, sexual and menstrual dysfunction, birth defects, neurological complications and increased risk of cancer.

There is no cure for alcoholism. Even if an alcoholic has long-term sobriety, he or she remains susceptible to relapse. To guard against a relapse, an alcoholic must avoid drinking alcohol. There is treatment for the disease and a chance to build a healthier lifestyle. Addiction treatment generally depends on the severity of alcoholism and alcohol abuse. It may include the following:

. Detox and withdrawal-a process of safely removing alcohol from the body
lasting from a period of days to weeks.
. Assessment and treatment for medical problems related to physical damage from the
disease
. Drug addiction treatment-some medications are used to reduce the craving for alcohol or to
produce severe physical reactions such as nausea and vomiting if one drinks while on
the medication. Drug treatment does not cure alcoholism nor will they remove the
desire to drink.
. Individual/Group Counseling-There are effective methods of counseling that help the
alcoholic to identify feelings that trigger the urge to drink and alternatives to manage
those feelings.

Checking in to a drug rehab or alcohol rehab program is an excellent method of treatment for alcohol abuse. There are many types of addiction treatment or alcohol treatment programs. Some offer alcohol detox and inpatient addiction treatment and others offer shorter-term residencies, sober living or outpatient counseling. When researching drug rehabs, ask what addiction treatment services they offer. If you are looking for an alcohol treatment program, alcohol rehab program or drug rehab program you can call 1-800-511-9225, a national alcohol treatment program helpline.

Drug Rehab Chronicles - Beware of Prescription Drug Combinations
By Rod MacTaggart

After years of drug abuse, Vicki Lynn Marshall finally met her end with a deadly combination of prescription and over-the-counter drugs. The jury’s still out on whether the cause of death was accidental or otherwise, but one thing is certain - had Vicki Lynn completed a successful drug rehab long ago, she would likely be alive today.

For Vickie Lynn, the spiral to the autopsy table started years ago. Drug and alcohol abuse, dependency, and perhaps addiction, were part of her lifestyle. But when a series of adverse personal events led her to combine several prescription drugs, she was physically pushed over the edge.

The long list on the pathologist’s report was shocking. At the time of her death, she had consumed not two or three, or even four drugs - the autopsy found nine different prescription drugs and one powerful over-the-counter medication, at least five or six of which cascaded into the next, adding to and increasing their effects:

1. Cipro, a powerful antibiotic used to handle bacterial and viral infections

2.Chloral hydrate, a sedative and hypnotic to help her sleep

3. Benadryl, an OTC antihistamine

4. Four powerful tranquilizers

5. Atropine

6. Topiramate, an anticonvulsant now prescribed for migraines

Although the antibiotic was obviously needed to handle an infection, the sedatives and tranquilizers were indicative of needing drug rehab to get down to the bottom of what was causing the drug abuse. And the sedatives and tranquilizers, along with the antihistamine, atropine and Topiramate, are what actually killed her - each of them depresses respiration and circulation and, in Vicki Lynn’s case, these systems became so depressed they simply shut down. “She didn t suffer,” the pathologist said, “she went to sleep.”

According to her autopsy records, Vickie Lynn Marshall died of an “acute combined drug intoxication” complicated by two minor infections, neither of which was dangerous if treated properly. Taken singly, none of the drugs was life-threatening, and none was an overdose.

Could Vicki Lynn’s life have been saved? Probably everything possible was done in the end but, factually, the problem started years ago - when she became dependant on drugs and alcohol. Had Vicki Lynn, or someone who cared about her, recognized the signs and made sure she got through a drug rehab program that addressed the issues behind her drug abuse, she may not have turned to drugs when events seemed to conspire against her and she may be alive today.

Vicki Lynn’s story is not unusual - millions of people depend on prescription drugs. But, as we can see from Vicki Lynn’s story, some of them can be dangerous. If someone you care about is dependant on or addicted to prescription drugs, find a successful drug rehab program. Don’t let them end up on the autopsy table like Vicki Lynn Marshall - who you may know as Anna Nicole Smith.

Treating Vulvodynia and Vulvar Vestibulitis with Dilators and Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation
By Sally Smith

Treating Vulvodynia and Vulvar Vestibulitis with Dilators and Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation.

Vulvodynia is a painful syndrome effecting women of all ages. It is diagnosed as pain in the vulvar vestibule area, which could also be described as the entrance to the vagina.

Sufferers of Vulvodynia and Vulvar Vestibulitis find it extremely painful to attempt sexual intercourse, wear tampons, and in severe cases they cannot wear tight clothing without several discomfort.

Whilst there is no know cause of vulvodynia there are a number of treatment options available.

One of the most common and successful methods of treating Vulvodynia and Vulvar Vestibulitis is through physiotherapy specializing in pelvic floor rehabilitation. Pelvic floor exercises coupled with the use of a dilator will decrease the pain experienced as a result of vulvodynia, and in many cases this pain becomes completely manageable and the sufferer can enjoy a normal, healthy sex life.

To start with, you need to practice pelvic floor exercises, the dilator will be introduced once these are mastered.

Step 1:
Lying down with your knees slightly bent, draw your pelvic floor muscles upwards towards your pubic bone. You will experience a feeling of tightness inside your vagina.
Be sure to take deep breaths and relax all muscles in your legs and stomach.

Step 2.
Hold this ‘tightened’ upwards state for 5 seconds.

Step 4:
Release your muscles. Imagine you are going from being ‘upwards’ to letting go and dropping back down to the ground floor. Rest for 10 seconds.

Step 5.
Repeat 10 times.

It can be quite difficult to master this so be sure to practice. If you have difficulty visualising the ‘upwards’ and ‘resting’ states, it helps to practice on the toilet. When you begin urinating try and stop the flow of urine midflow then release. This is the same as what you want to be doing during your exercises.

Once you have mastered your pelvic floor exercise of tightening and releasing, then it is time to introduce a dilator.
A dilator is essential a small tube,, it comes in various sizes. The greater your pain, the smaller the size of the dilator you should begin with. If you do not have a dilator you can use a clean finger.

Step 1: Apply a small amount of lubricant to the tip of your dilator.

Step 2. Following the same steps as above, lie down on your back with your knees bent. Relax your pelvic floor muscles and insert the dilator as deep as is comfortable.

Step 3.
Tighten your pelvic floor muscles around the dilator. Remember to stay relaxed and take deep breathes.

Step 4.
Rotate the dilator. Imagine a clock face, hold the dilator in the directions of 3 O’clock, 6 O’clock, 9 O’clock and 12 O’clock.

Step 4.
Hold each for 5 seconds then release and rest for 10 seconds.

Step 5.
Repeat 10 times.

When first starting it can help to use your finger instead of the dilator. This way you can actually feel your pelvic muscles tightening around your finger then releasing, so you know that you are doing the exercise correctly.

As your pain decreases, go up a size until you are ready to introduce your partner into the exercises and resume sexual contact.

Is Drug Rehab the Ultimate Consequence of Marijuana Use?
By Rod MacTaggart

Pot, herb, weed, grass, widow, reefer, ganja, cannabis, hash, Bubble Gum, Northern Lights, Fruity Juice, Afghani #1, Skunk, and dozens of other nicknames - call it what you will, marijuana is still the most commonly abused illicit drug in the United States. And the decades-long debate about whether it’s good or bad for you continues at all levels of society, from research scientists down to the pot-smoking stoner in the street. Whatever the answer is, the latest government treatment figures reveal marijuana as the primary drug of abuse in 15 percent of all admissions to treatment clinics and drug rehab programs in the United States - more than a quarter of a million people.

Let’s take a quick, brief look at the history of the pros and cons of marijuana.

Back in 1936, an anti-marijuana documentary-style propaganda film called Reefer Madness was shown in b-rated theaters across the US. It begins with a teacher warning pupils and their parents against the dangers of marijuana. But a group of students fall prey to pushers, and descend into madness and murder after they smoke “reefers”. By the end of the film, Jimmy has run down and killed a pedestrian, Jack has shot Mary, Ralph has gone insane and beaten Jack to death and Blanche has killed herself. Treatment in a proper drug detox or drug rehab environment is never suggested as a solution. In those days, reefers were the end of life as we know it. So that was one early, and we admit, extreme view.

Incidentally, a year later new anti-cannabis laws were introduced by Commissioner of Narcotics Harry J. Anslinger, widely considered to be the country’s first “drug czar”, who told Congress: “If the hideous monster Frankenstein came face to face with the monster marijuana, he would drop dead of fright.”

Now let’s jump forward a couple of generations. By the 1960s, any questions about negative effects, addiction problems, or the need for marijuana abuse drug rehab has little relevance. Millions of Americans now view pot as a benign and helpful herb - peace and love, brother! But the government continues to battle marijuana with harsh penalties for possession and distribution, and pushers are still called “drug peddlers” - as if the word “peddler” carries some negative, evil connotation.

Meanwhile, scientists have not been idle. On the one hand, marijuana has proven to be helpful for a host of medical problems. It dramatically reduces the side effects of chemotherapy and improves the appetites for cancer and AIDS patients. It reverses some of the effects of glaucoma. And most recently, at Harvard, marijuana smoke was discovered to reduce lung cancer tumors by 50% while reducing metastasis, or spreading of the disease. There’s no question that it is helping patients in some medical areas, but the question remains as to whether marijuana’s side-effects - problems with memory and learning, distorted perception, difficulty in thinking and problem solving, loss of coordination, increased heart rate, and others - might lead to the need for drug detox or drug rehab even among medical patients.

On the flip side, other studies show that marijuana is the easily-available and most common stepping-stone to “hard” drugs, adding not only to the numbers of people committing drug-related crime, but also of addicts requiring drug rehab. A UK study points to an increase in psychoses by as much as 40% among long-term users, while an Australian study warns that teenagers with a certain genetic vulnerability are at risk of psychosis just by smoking pot once a week.

Whether marijuana is a benign and misunderstood substance bestowed on mankind by a benevolent Mother Nature or an evil scourge that drives people crazy isn’t the real issue. The issue is that, like it or not, marijuana is not the benevolent bringer of peace to man, but a continuing source of problems in our society. And the evidence for this is the hundreds of thousands of people needing treatment and drug rehab every year because of their involvement with marijuana.

Holistic Drug Rehabs Not Always What They Seem
By Jonathan Huttner

There are quite a few drug addiction treatment programs throughout the United States that claim to be holistic drug rehab programs. The truth is that there are very few “true” holistic drug treatment centers.

Holistic Drug Rehab Can Be a Marketing Term

Holistic is a term I believe means all natural in treating the whole person, body, mind and spirit. When it comes down to it, very few holistic drug rehab programs detox patients naturally. Prescription drugs are used to ease the withdrawal symptoms ,as well as, to assist in managing symptoms associated with dual diagnosis. There are only a handful of drug rehabs that detox a person naturally.

Don t get me wrong, I think there is alot to be said for a “real” holistic drug rehab. The fewer chemicals or drugs we use the better and the quicker the body, mind and spirit will heal, but we have to be honest when patients are coming for drug rehab.

There is little doubt that in times of need, people are drawn to centers they believe will help them. Drug treatment centers that market themselves as “healing facilities”. While every drug rehab deserves to market themselves, them must be held accountable when it comes to the care they provide. Some patients don t get a second chance.

Holistic Drug Rehab Centers Do Work

While I believe in holistic drug rehabilitation, I also believe there is a place for more mainstream approaches within the drug rehab center. A drug rehab that is able to take the best from all drug treatment and combine that for the overall good of the patient is what I look for. So while a real holistic drug rehab makes a difference in drug addiction treatment, be careful the drug treatment center is providing what they market. For more information you can call the helpline at 1-800-511-9225.

Drug Rehab Programs: Variety and Effectiveness
By Jonathan Huttner

There are thousands of drug rehab or drug treatment programs available throughout the United States. They term themselves drug rehab, drug treatment, addiction treatment facility, free standing addiction treatment, detox and a host of other names. I wanted to take a moment and explain the differences to you.

In many cases, your choice of a drug treatment or alcohol treatment facility will hinge on several factors: medical and psychiatric care, comprehensiveness of the program, licensure of program and staff, family program, relapse prevention program and aftercare program. In addition, there is of course a person’s ability to pay for their drug or alcohol rehab facility.

Listed below will be a list of the various types of programs you may encounter on your search for a drug rehab, alcoholism or addiction treatment program:

Drug Rehab (free standing facility ) this is a stand alone facility, specializing in the treatment of drug addiction or alcoholism. It is not part of a general hospital.

Drug Addiction (free standing facility) same as above

Alcoholism Treatment (free standing facility) same as above

Drug Rehab (hospital based) this is a program that is usually located on a private wing within a general hospital. The addict or alcoholic who has developed complicated medical or psychiatric problems might be better off detoxing within the confines of a hospital. Allow an addiction specialist or physician to make that decision for you.

Addiction Treatment (hospital based) same as above

Alcoholism Treatment (hospital based) same as above

Detox Program (hospital based or free standing) is a level of care in which a person is medically monitored in an effort to assist them with the withdrawal symptoms associated with drug addiction or alcoholism. The greater the medical needs of an individual, the better the chances of their need for a hospital based detox.

Long Term Residential Addiction Treatment Programs are generally free standing facilities, designed for the addict or alcoholic whose recovery needs warrant a longer period of time than a typical 30 day addiction treatment program can provide.

As you can see there are many different types of centers available for drug rehab. Don’t be fooled by promises of success rates or that one is less expensive than another, when you are trying to find an alcohol and drug rehab facility. Base your decision on where to go on your specific needs and the services the drug rehab provides.

Jonathan Huttner is one of the the principals at Lakeview Health Systems, an addiction treatment,

Why Are Patients Reluctant To Join Cardiac Rehabilitation
By Ng Peng Hock

Cardiac rehabilitation is an integral part of the cardiovascular continuum. Secondary prevention is extremely essential as this prevents a recurrence or further complications such as heart failure after a heart attack. However, only few patients who are on their way to recover from heart attack or stroke are willing to join the cardiac rehabilitation program. This is because most of these patients are faced with many myths and misconception. The worse scenario is that many people still feel that there is a magic cure by depending on pills and potions recommended by friends.

Most people think that their bodies will be too weak after surgery so the best thing is to rest as much as possible. But the truth is that exercise is extremely important after surgery. During the cardiac rehabilitation program in the hospital, an exercise program will be planned according to one’s needs. The physiotherapist will explain and introduce the types of exercises that can be performed at home and at work. Exercising will help patients lose weight, lower blood pressure, and prevent type-2 diabetes.

It has been told that women and young people do not have to worry about heart disease and stroke it is a man’s problem and also only affects the elderly. This is definitely not true. Heart disease is on the increase in women and young people. A study found that young patients seemed to gain the most from a cardiac rehabilitation program which consists of group exercises and classes giving advice and reassurance. Heart disease which strikes people in later years often has its beginning in childhood and youth and it can strike both men and women and they are equally at risk.

For people with genes of heart disease may think that because of the family history, no matter how many times they go for rehabilitation, it is not going to help to prevent another heart attack. However, the actual fact is that major part of preventing second heart attack is through cardiac rehabilitation. People do have some control over their health through their lifestyle, the smoke-free environment they live in, how they exercise and what they eat. Their genes will affect only 25 to 30 percent of their ageing process.

Since rehabilitation program also deals with diet and exercise, people can just eat healthy and exercise three times a week so that they save the hassle to go for rehabilitation classes. In reality, people may look fit physically without being aware that they could be over-stressing their heart. The cardiac rehabilitation classes recommend to the patients the appropriate type of exercises that match the condition of their heart and their medical history and they monitor how well the patients are doing. The nutrition counseling, health education talks and other rehabilitative services will also provide necessary knowledge and support to the patients’ recovery.

Rehabilitation Programs, Where Do You Start
By James Johnson

Rehabilitation Programs

Programs for rehabilitation have popped up everywhere in the United States. What is needed is to establish goals for rehabilitation programs. A must is to determine the specific training requirements to obtain those goals in rehab.

An alcohol rehabilitation center that provides comprehensive alcohol rehabilitation services for your alcoholism is very important. Prevalence of alcoholism is increasing in some states therefore more people are looking for Alcohol rehabilitation facilities thur-out the U.S. Never forget it is necessary that you look for reliable and experienced rehabilitation services always, this will give faster and more effective results.

Rehabilitation Treatment Programs

Once a person begins to see addiction as a problem in their life they should seek treatment for their alcoholism or addiction problem, but that is not always the case. Treatment for alcoholism or addiction may need to be medically supervised for detoxification to avoid life threatening withdrawal such as seizures and convulsion. Traditionally people, who have been treated with pharmaceuticals for addiction, have documented that pharmaceutical-based treatment does not work unless coupled with behaviorally changes.

Some say moderation, especially with an alcohol addiction, has not shown to be a viable solution, but, abstention seems to be the best for those addicted to legal drugs.

Rehabilitation is the restoration of lost capabilities or a treatment used to heal a persons body. Patients with an history of addiction may need an inpatient treatment program. Treatment begins by studying all the factors of psychological of the patient, including their social background, to decide a course of treatment.

Dual Diagnosis Treatment Services are Ineffective for the GLBT Population in a Drug Rehab
By Jonathan Huttner

Most drug rehab services, including alcohol treatment programs, are geared towards serving a white, heterosexual, male, client. Unless great effort has been put into awareness training, developing knowledge about the experiences and circumstances of minority groups, and the establishment of programs to deal with the special needs of different groups of oppressed people, services will simply perpetuate institutional discrimination.

Gay Alcohol Treatment Programs Not Adequate

U.S. researchers Lohrenz et al (1978) found that 37% of homosexuals experienced discrimination from alcohol treatment program staff while Fifield, De Crescenzo &amp Latham (1975) discovered that 75% of homosexuals who are recovering from alcoholism believe that mainstream drug rehab and alcohol rehab program are not geared to treating homosexuals and do not provide an accepting and supportive environment. Because of discrimination homosexuals are less likely to attend an alcohol treatment program and drug addiction treatment program unless, that is, they are passing. In this case, if the clinician does not bring up the subject, one of the major causes of their problems will be ignored. Rofes (1989) says: By ignoring the special problems that a lesbian alcoholic, for example, presents, an alcohol treatment program will be doing a service to no one. Their alcoholism treatment of the individual will be less than adequate and may tend to intensify the woman s feelings of isolation and difference. Only by bringing the issue into the open and addressing the woman s lesbianism as an aspect of her life which she needs to feel positively about, will the program be truly effective.

Avoiding Coming Out

Shernoff &amp Finnegan (1991) discuss the case of a lesbian who is hiding her sexuality, then stress: It is the responsibility of each alcoholism treatment counselor to take the lead in this area the same way alcohol treatment counselors routinely question early family history, dynamics of shame, denial and spirituality. By omitting questions about sexual orientation, or the more subtle questions about sexual or affectional feelings or fantasies for a person of the same sex, the counselor is not obtaining information about all the possible contributing factors for achieving and maintaining sobriety. While Hellman et al (1989) note: Therapists may fear causing anxiety by asking patients about sexual orientation because of discomfort with the subject. However, this questioning can be essential in helping to overcome the secrecy and denial that are hall marks of the struggle with both alcoholism and homosexuality. Of course, if a worker is ignorant about homosexuality s/he is likely to make the situation worse:

Problems Faced In Gay Alcohol Treatment Programs

American surveys, referred to by Hellman et al (1989), reveal a list of complaints about mainstream provision ranging from

? heterosexual bias in alcoholism treatment and evaluation (including either focusing primarily on sexual orientation when inappropriate or ignoring important factors linked with sexuality)

? ignorance about lesbian/gay issues and discomfort at approaching matters of sexuality

? ignorance about the inter-relation of homosexuality and alcohol abuse

. Neisen &amp Sandall (1990) worked at a program designed to offer alcohol treatment to chemically dependent lesbians and gays. They list their clients experiences of non-gay drug rehab or non gay alcohol rehab, which include:

<dir> difficulty in being open about their sexual orientation due to fear of staff/client harassment,? staff telling them it wasn t acceptable to discuss sexual orientation

some were forced to disclose their sexual orientation

as soon as their sexuality was known, some were discharged

some said that after disclosure the alcohol treatment they received was different due to an atmosphere of condemnation

some feared that if their sexual orientation was known about this would receive more emphasis than their chemical dependency

some addiction treatment programs were not happy having their partner attend a family program.</dir>

Citing Morales &amp Graves (1983) and Hellman, Stanton, Lee, Tytun and Vachon (1989), O Hanlan (1996) notes:

? the majority of detox and drug rehabilitation and alcohol rehab programs were insensitive to issues of sexual orientation and did not, generally, encourage its disclosure

? homophobia limits the success of recovery and alcohol treatment for lesbian substance abusers (Hall, 1990 de Monteflores, 1986)

? failure to acknowledge sexual orientation makes relapse more likely (Cabaj, 1992)

? lesbians were more likely to attend alcohol treatment program services which address lesbian social issues and provide lesbian counsellors (Hall,1986, 1990, 1992, 1993, 1994 Morales &amp Graves, 1983).

Family Treatment In Gay Alcohol Treatment Programs

Inclusion of families in addiction treatment and alcohol rehab program is now an acceptable way of supporting those coming off alcohol dependency (Nardi, 1982 Shernoff &amp Finnegan, 1991). This would be problematic for the homosexual client, partly because many will have been rejected by their families and those families who do not reject their offspring rarely want to discuss anything connected with homosexuality. Yet it is the ignorance and lack of acceptance of families which is one of the main reasons why homosexuals are vulnerable to alcohol abuse and drug abuse. Alcoholism treatment does work!

A gay alcohol treatment program, drug rehab or gay friendly dual diagnosis treatment program, can be found at a web site located at www.lakeviewhealth.com or you can call the dual diagnosis national helpline at 1-800-511-9225 to locate a dual diagnosis treatment program in your local area.

Jonathan Huttner is a principal with Lakeview Health Systems, which treats drug addiction and alcohol addiction in a gay friendly environment. Lakeview also operates a nationally recognized dual diagnosis treatment program.

Drug Rehab Chronicles
By Matt Hull

Seven years of recovery is a tough road to travel. Kim loves the life she lives now, but this sentiment certainly didn t always ring true. “I had it all, a husband who loved me, two beautiful children, a big house, a great job. I started using drugs when a doctor prescribed painkillers for a back injury that happened while skiing.” From there, Kim’s life went on a downward spiral, until she found a successful drug rehab program.

When the pills she got from her doctor were no longer enough, Kim became involved in something called doctor shopping, going from office to office seeking new prescriptions in greater quantities. But her quest did not end there she soon turned to street drugs to self-medicate.

Kim s parents and her husband were aware of her addiction and eventually convinced her to seek help by going to a detox facility that was based on the 12-step methodology of recovery. “I wasn t ready to get better,” Kim explains, “I met a guy in drug rehab who said that he could get me some heroin once I got out. The minute I was released, he met me outside and I got high in the parking lot.” Needless to say, Kim s battle with substance abuse was far from over.

Several rehab facilities later, and with a short stint in jail outside of Houston, Texas behind her, Kim s family finally discovered a successful and effective drug rehab program with the help of www.drugrehabreferral.com

Now tanned and fit, Kim is the picture of health and certainly does not appear to be the kind of person who, for a short period of time, was homeless. “I have so much fun without drugs in my body that I can only vaguely recall the life I led when cocaine and heroin were the most important things in the world to me,” says Kim.

Kim is remarried now and shares custody of her two children, who are in their early teens. She works in the field of recovery, helping people find a successful drug rehab program so they can save the lives of their loved ones, as she herself was saved.

Matt Hull s work has appeared in print, on the web, and on television. His work in recovery has inspired him to recount the stories of recovering addicts who have found success in sobriety.
